PART 2: THE BOY WALKED ONTO THE STAGE DURING THE AWARD CEREMONY… AND HANDED THE MAYOR A KEY

PART 1

The microphone crashed onto the stage.

Everyone looked up.

The mayor had been in the middle of his acceptance speech.

The crowd was applauding.

Cameras were flashing.

Then a young boy stepped onto the stage.

Alone.

No one knew where he came from.

Security started moving immediately.

But the boy wasn’t scared.

He walked directly toward the mayor.

The audience laughed nervously.

Thinking it was a mistake.

The mayor forced a smile.

“Hey, buddy…”

But the boy interrupted him.

“My grandfather told me to give you this.”

The crowd went silent.

The boy opened his hand.

A small brass key rested in his palm.

The mayor froze.

Completely froze.

His smile disappeared.

The boy held out the key.

The mayor didn’t take it.

Couldn’t take it.

Because he recognized it instantly.

That key had disappeared twenty years ago.

Along with a man who was never found.

Then the boy said something that made the mayor stumble backward.

“He said you’d know where the box is.”

PART 2

The audience watched in complete silence.

The mayor stared at the key.

His hands shaking.

“Where did you get that?”

The boy reached into his jacket.

Pulled out an old envelope.

The paper was yellow with age.

The mayor recognized the handwriting instantly.

His face lost all color.

It belonged to his former business partner.

A man who vanished decades earlier.

The boy handed him the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

The mayor.

His missing partner.

And a metal lockbox.

The date on the photograph made no sense.

Because it had been taken years after the man supposedly disappeared.

Then the boy pointed toward the back of the auditorium.

Everyone turned.

A tall elderly man was standing near the doors.

Watching.

Waiting.

And the mayor looked like he’d just seen a ghost.
