The hallway was loud.
Then someone laughed.
— “Yo… what is THAT?”
A boy stopped.
Everyone looked down.
His shoes were completely worn out.
But that wasn’t the strange part.
One shoe…
had a number written on it.
In marker.
“17”
— “What is that… your score?”
— “Or how many days they survived?”
Phones came out.
— “Nah this is going viral…”
The boy tried to walk.
Someone blocked him.
— “Wait— what does 17 mean?”
The boy stayed silent.
Tight grip on his backpack.
— “Say it.”
No answer.
Then—
A calm voice behind them:
— “Move.”

The teacher stepped forward.
Looked at the shoe.
Then at the number.
“17”
His expression changed.
Not angry.
Not surprised.
Something else.
Heavy.
— “You kept counting…”
The hallway went quiet.
Confused.
The teacher turned to the others.
— “That number…”
A pause.
— “…is how many days he’s been sleeping outside.”
Silence.
No dramatic speech.
No lecture.
Just that.
One of the students slowly lowered their phone.
Another stepped back.
The teacher gently said—
— “Go to class.”
